The need for provision of high quality medical care with competitive prices in a friendly and welcoming environment has led to the development of Health Tourism, which for many countries is a very important source of income and it significantly contributes to their economic growth.

The tourist product “Sun and Sea” has always been a significant source of revenue for Greece, supported by its mild climate, the variety of sunny islands and beautiful beaches, as well as the traditional and authentic hotel infrastructure.

At the present moment, Greece is investing in the upgrade of the traditional “Sun and Sea” products, following the below strategic steps:

  • Quality improvement and hotel units’ certification, as well as creation of luxury resorts aiming to attract an audience of higher income that is interested in higher value tourism products.
  • Adaption of the legal framework so as to combine tourism investments with the construction of holiday homes, with ultimate goal to attract retirees and elderly people for long-term holidays.
  • Improvement of transport infrastructure through the upgrade of regional airports, ports, marinas and road networks.
  • Creation of new, targeted tourism products, focused on specific thematic clusters having as a main axis the local culture and natural beauty so as to increase to average tourist output per day, as well as to extend the tourism season beyond the summer months.

Subsectors of Tourism that are of particular interest are resorts for integrated tourism development of second homes, golf courses, sports tourism, health and wellness tourism, the upgrading and construction of new marinas, conference centers, the development of agritourism products, religious tourism, spa centers and thalassotherapy centers, gastronomic tourism and a variety of thematic chooices regarding the cultural and historic heritage of Greece.
